Mission: Lower Decks
Location: Sickbay, Deck 3
Timeline: Prior to Launch

It had been about forty minutes since Maddie had requested that Ewo join her in sickbay. Not that that mattered in any way, it was not a medical emergency, it was simply a request for assistance. The data PaDD she gripped tightly in her hand held the sign off from Canaan and now Ewo was needed for the next stage.

A tricky conduit fitting had taken a little longer to finish checking over than expected. Now all squared away, she made her way up, to vessels small sickbay. At this point she had only met the medical officer in passing and was actually looking forward to a proper talk. Walking steadily though the door, she smiled and offered. "Apologies for any delay, a conduit fitting was being a little uncooperative. What can I do for you?"

At the arrival of the operations officer, Maddie's excitement became visibly obvious. She jumped up from her chair and thrust the PaDD forward toward Ewo. "The Captain approved my request," she said with a grin. "I can have some holo emitters installed in sickbay to run my program... which, is why I need you. I'm a doctor, not an engineer!"

"Well I should be able to help you out there." Ewo returned a broad smile, she loved working with people on pet projects or customising, the opportunity to help them put their own stamp on their workspace. "Let's 's start with what sort of programs are you wanting to run? From there we can work out how many and configurations." She paused for a moment then added. "Should be fun."

"It's a program I helped to design, a pet therapy program. It doesn't require much to run, the matrices are all pretty minimal and definitely not as complex as an EMH or anything. I can show you the program if you like?" Maddie offered, gesturing toward her small office space in the back of sickbay

“A very intriguing idea please lead on..” She responded with genuine interest, she was vaguely familiar that medical departments used a number of different therapy’s and was interested to see this one, following Maddie from the main area in to her office area.

The 'office' was somewhat cramped, but there was enough space for the two of them to move around. "I guess it's a good thing I made my bed this morning," she quipped, motioning for Ewo to sit on the bunk that doubled as seating when needed. Picking up another PaDD, she handed it across to Ewo. "All the details of the program are there," she said as she spun her desk chair around and sat on it. "It's pretty straight forward. The program can run a series of holographic animals that can be customised, depending on what people want. It provides all the benefits of a pet, without having a zoo full of live animals on the ship."

Seating herself on the bunk-cum-sofa, which reminded her of the daybeds that were a phase for her growing up, taking the pads and looking over the specifics of the proposal Ewo was even more interested in the concept, and from the initial look it wouldn’t be to difficult to setup. “That is very unique, it is the first I have heard of this, but I am very glad I have, I suppose the size of animal would be limited by the space, a horse would take up quite a bit of space for example, also would you like them to have the run of sickbay so to speak?”

"I think so, at least in the main area of sickbay. I'd like it to be as accessible as possible for anyone who may wish to use it. Most animals used are common house pets, or smaller animals that individuals would be used to or have grown up with. A comforting sense of home." Maddie smiled at the fact that Ewo seemed interested in the program. "It's not very complex, but it can be very beneficial."

Nodding slowly and methodically as she took on board both the requirements and the desired results, considering a number of possable setups, the comment about a sense of home or the familer struck a cord. "Sounds like a particular effective process, I suspect most of us will need a bit of grounding at some point. Now let's talk set up. In fact do you mind if we return to the main area, I would like to check something."

Walking out of the small side area, into the main room, taking out her tricorder setting it to send out measure markers, specifically to the four main corners and then moved around the room, in and out of the biobeds crouching occasionally looking for line of sight and dead spots. Returning to the center, she smiled at Maddie, "Just checking a few ideas. I want to put a cluster in each of the four corners that should give you best coverage."

"How long do you think it would take to get everything set up?" Maddie asked, unable to hide her excitement. Clearly this was something she was really happy about. "I mean, I'm sure you have plenty of other much more important things to be doing right now, so I can wait, honestly."

“I reckon it will take about two hours.” She said carefully, trying to factor in installation time and calibration. When Maddie brought up other duties, Ewo considered her daily tasks left to complete, with nothing too pressing she added. “I’ll pick up my tools, requisition the emitters from the Starbase quartermaster, and get started.”

Maddie was about to clap, but caught herself in time, clasping her hands firmly behind her back. "Thank you, I really appreciate it. It'll be nice to be able to use this program, especially if we do end up in deep space."

“It'll be interesting to see it in action.” Ewo responded with a warm smile. “I might just have to test it, if that would be okay?”

"Of course!" Maddie's excitement returned visibly. "Do you have a preference for what animal you'd like? I have a few that I used to use, almost as pets. They kept me company on my last assignment when I was in sickbay."

It took a moment or two for her to think but a creature came to mind. “How about a Cebepyba, it’s native to Betelguise, a rodent like creature but the size of a small dog. It should be in the database.”

"If it's in the database I should be able to add it into the program easily enough. It might take some tweaking after the program is running, depending on exactly what you want." There was a not so small part of her that was excited that Ewo seemed so interested in the program. "I can get all the parameters while you install the emitters if you want? Then we can import the new parameters once everything is up and running and tweak it from there?"

“Sounds like a plan.” Ewo said definitely and happily. “I will take my leave then.” She turned and started to walk out of the room pausing and turned back with a positive smile added. “Be back shortly.”

While Ewo was gone, Maddie sat at her desk and started programming the parameters of the Cebepyba into the program, watching the 3D model take shape on the screen.
